YARRRRRRRRRGHHH!!!!

On my visit to the Colosseum. I got into the spirit of the thing perhaps a bit too much. During my visit I happened across the descendant of one of the lions that used to live there:
Also, in the Colosseum museum, they had a collection of bone fragments from the many different creatures that were let loose for sport. I was quite surprised to see the following:
I thought these guys were mythical! But here is the photographic proof:

Awesome. They were just starting work on building that piece of the “floor” when I was there in 2000. Is it something you can walk across, or is it just there to illustrate how there was a sort of stage/arena with chambers underneath?
Every photo I have of that place is full of cats. There were hundreds of mangy-lookin’ stray cats prowling and lounging all over. You lion-descendant looks much healthier…

I only saw one cat while I was there. But it was early morning, they were probably all sleeping off a night of mousing. The floor looked sturdy enough, but we weren’t allowed out onto it. Likewise with the stands where the emperor used to sit. Maybe you have to be part of a special tour to walk out on them or something.
