Surfing Playa del Somo

by on Mar.17, 2009, under Uncategorized

This morning I went surfing off Somo Beach, just east of Santander. AND IT WAS AWESOME.

After striking out yesterday with the first couple surf shops I tried, I got in touch with this guy named Nacho who runs one of the surf shops off Soma. He hooked me up with a board and wetsuit for only 10 Euro which was way better than I’ve ever gotten a rental for, especially since that was going to be an all-day price (too bad I had to work, or I would’ve surfed all day!) The waves were the best I’ve seen in my admittedly limited experience. Just constant good waves, one after another. And the beach was beautiful. I forgot to get pics but I’m going back tomorrow (wouldn’t miss it)! And I’ll get some video. My digital camera is broken – more specifically it has become horribly nearsighted – I think some grit or something must have gotten into the motor that controls autofocus – when I try to focus it I can hear something struggling but nothing happens. I hope it’s fixable. There happens to be a photography store on the block where the hotel is, I’m gonna see if the guy there can fix it, next time I have a chance. But between surfing for the next couple days and work, I may not have a chance for a while.

Also, I’m learning Spanish as quickly as I can, with the help of an 8-part audio course, a Spanish-English dictionary, and, oh yeah, being in Spain, specifically a part of Spain where hardly anybody speaks English. Nacho does, which is lucky, also one of the ladies who runs the hotel. Other than that, I’ve had to pick it up so I’m not relying on charades quite so much to get points across.

That’s all for tonight. Pictures and video tomorrow, I promise!!!

Note:Google Maps plugin is being wonky. I wasn’t really quite that far out in the water 🙂

So, you’re ‘out on the Playa’ again, only this one is a lot less dry and dusty… lol

Looked at this on GoogleMaps. That long curved peninsula stretching off to the west, oriented the way it is to the probable wave action coming around the point, looks like a classic prime spot for surf. Are the waves large enough to permit ‘shooting the tube’?

Not while I’ve been here, maybe six feet at most. Of course I’m not nearly good enough yet to have “shot the tube” even had there been 🙂 Someday…
