And then the Vaporetto!

What a day yesterday was – I broke my personal record for most number of different methods of transportation. Let’s see…
So, first of all, to explain WHY, I was originally just going to fly directly from Santander to Venice. But I was dismayed to discover that it’s pretty much impossible to get a ticket out of Santander to anywhere for less then a thousand bucks. I guess I was just lucky flying in, there was one ticket for a hundred bucks from Amsterdam for some reason. Also, taking just the train from Santander to Italy would have taken over 24 hours and cost over $500. So both those were out. Then I had a brainstorm – usually airfare is much cheaper when it’s between major cities. Sure enough, I was able to buy a train ticket to Madrid, and a plane ticket from there to Venice for less than $200. So that’s what I did. Then there were little problems, such as that I had to return my rental car at the Santander airport then somehow get to the train station. So anyway, here’s what my day was like yesterday:
I woke up at 4 AM, took the elevator down from the hotel, walked across El Astillero to my rental car. Drove the car to the airport and left it at the rental place. Called a taxi which took me to the Santander train station. Took the train from Santander to Madrid. Took the subway from the train station in Madrid to Madrid Airport. Flew from Madrid to Marco Polo Airport. Took a bus from the airport to the train station in Venice, on the island. And finally, I took a Vaporetto, or water bus, down the Grand Canal. Oh yeah, then I walked from the vaporetto stop to my hostel. Plus, of course, I also took various escalators, moving sidewalks etc. It’s like I was in a Richard Scarey book or something.

How are the water vehicles powered? Gas? Electric? I imagine that any boats powered by guys with poles are the equivalent of the horse and buggy rigs that take tourists around Central Park…

Not sure, some sort of internal combustion, probably either gas or diesel. Yeah, the guys with poles are pretty much a tourist thing. I briefly considered hiring two of them yesterday and getting them to race each other down the grand canal. But then I decided it wouldn’t be nearly as cool as it sounds, since they’d be paddling. Might have been funny to watch though 🙂
